Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures: Season 3: Story 6: Speeder Surprise

What is it ? : The Young Jedi are visiting Nash along with droids, and Nash gifts them three speeder bikes, designed with droid slots for them to use. Each speeder is designed for it's new owner, Nubs is designed to be tough, Lys speeder is designed to be manoeuvrable, and Kai's is designed to be fast.
They take off with the speeder bikes, but Kai isn't sure of the controls and crashes into a wall, despite Beepers suggesting the right control. But he catches up with his friends and they reach the Tenoo grasslands where they encounter a lakeetah cub, who they name Zippy as he is fast.
Lys looks up the Lakeetah and discovers they always travel with their families, and they set out to find them. Kai once again ignores Beepers suggestion and crashes into a swamp, and needs towed out again, and when they locate the Lakeetah family it is on the far side of a ravine. Kai sees a stone ramp and thinks he can jump his speeder bike across it, but Beepers objects, suggesting instead a fallen tree which partially bridges the chasm. Kai listens to Beepers, and the three Young Jedi leap the ravine on their bikes at Beepers signal.
They reach the Lakeetah family and Zippy rejoins them, and the Young Jedi spend the rest of the day travelling the grasslands with the Lakeetah. . . .

High Points : I do like the speeder bikes that Nash gifts the Young Jedi, they're a nice addition, although only a few episodes from the end of the series it does almost seem that they're a merchandising creation, so kids can buy the Young Jedi action figures, their companion droids and now the speeders designed to carry both. The way each of the vehicles is custom designed for the feature of each Young Jedi is kind of cool, with Nubs one being tough and damage resistant, Kai's fast, but Lys just gets manoeuvrable, which seems a little like they couldn't work out something for her.

Low Points : I was slightly annoyed by Kai crashing into a swamp, and his speeder bike sinking into it, when this is a repulsorlift vehicle, which we've seen hovering over water, so how does it sink into a swamp? But that's just a story thing, and while Nub's speeder bike is supposed to be tough, ramming through boulders does make it seem ridiculously tough.

So what do you really think ? : Mainly to introduce the Speeder Bikes, and bring back the droids, this is a fairly standard episode of Young Jedi Adventures, with them helping a young animal find it's family, something we've seen a few times before. But it's fast moving, the designs are nice, and passes it's short run time interestingly enough.

Final Words : And the moral of this one is, listen to people around you, they might know what they're doing when you don't.

Score : 7.5/10
