Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi : 5 : The Storm of Violence

What is it ? : We get an introduction telling us that time has passed since the battle of Bibin, that Nawaam has conquered much of the galaxy and the Jedi are fighting back but ineffectually, and Kara has been missing since.
We see Lah Zhima and Gennoh facing off, they fight briefly but Zhima cuts off Gennoh's cybernetic arm and slashes him across the face, Gennoh tries to continue fighting, but Zhima shatters his armour and he collapses as Zhima leaves.
We see Gennoh in a Bacta tank, his body has been replaced by a robot body, the only sign of him remaining is a single eye looking out from his mechanical face. He contacts Nawaam who is in the middle of a battle against Droids and Walkers, Gennoh asks to go after Zhima, but Nawaam tells him Zhima isn't necessary any longer, the problem with the Kyber Cannon has been solved, instead of making a giant crystal from many smaller crystals they have found a giant crystal where Zhima and Margrave were, so they will go and claim it.
On a forested world, we see a primitive species gathering fruits, and they spot Kara collecting fruit for herself, one of them follows her back to her shelter buried in the ground, and leaves her more fruit and she thanks them by name. They express interest in her lightsaber, but she says they can't have that one, but could have one from the bundle she carries. During the night she goes outside and practices with her saber.
In a town, Homen sneaks through the crowd overhearing Nawaam's people asking townspeople for help tracking down the Jedi, showing holograms of their faces, that the peoples help is required in return for the protection Nawaam's forces offer.
He is tracked by a hunter, but disappears into the sewers where he joins a group led by Kwana. Kwana is trying to motivate the group but having been on the run and hunted by superior forces for so long morale is low. However Ethan arrives with news that he's contacted other groups who are willing to join them, there are groups like them across the galaxy.
Nawaam is told that they have been told of a possible location for Kara, on a primitive world, so he dispatches a vessel to capture her. It arrives and begins burning the forest before spotting the settlement where the native species lives. Kara spots the burning and rushes to the village, rescuing her friend and telling survivors to follow the river where they'll be safer from the burning.
She spots an attacker on a speeder bike, dispatches him and uses the bike to head up a hill, and launches it from a tree, then force leaping aboard the vessel above. The detect her intrusion, but she angrily fights her way through the droids until she reaches the bridge killing everyone but the captain, he surrenders but in her anger she leaps upon him stabbing him into a console causing the ship to crash onto the surface.
She arrives back with the villagers, and her friend comes forward to thank her, but horror shows in their face and we draw back and see Kara's lightsaber has turned red. She drops it and flees into the forest before more of Nawaam's forces arrive and capture her friend and seize Kara's dropped lightsaber, telling the villagers they'll only get the prisoner back if they help find Kara as we see her fleeing panicked through the trees . . . .

High Points : Okay this does a Jedi fighting in anger better than any other Star Wars story seen on screen, I commented that it amused me back in my Last Jedi review with Snoke talking about Rey being of the Lightside while she's in his throne room grunting in anger, so when Kara was acting in anger last episode and this episode I kind of didn't expect any consequences, but we see her saber turn red. And it's not the saber that is tainted, as we've been told the sabers change colour according to the wielders heart, so it doesn't matter how much she runs she carries the taint with her, although it can act as a warning she needs to fix her ways.
The rest seems to be bringing up to date after time passes after the battle of Bibin, with only some conversation between Nawaam and Gennoh revealing any of the mystery, as Nawaam confirms he is not a Sith, and is using his Kyber Cannon and forces to bring order and protection to the galaxy, as he realised at the death of Tsutara that only force can defeat evil.
I did find the primitive species that Kara is hiding among to be quite appealing, they're not a pretty looking species, not cute and cuddly like the Ewoks, but their life in the forest does seem appealing, gather fruit with no major predators, and then Kara brings disaster to their world. Nicely done.

Low Points : It's not a massive thing, but I found it instantly annoying that we get told time has passed and then jump straight back into the Zhima / Gennoh fight. So either the intro lied to us, or they've been standing there for several months. For the shortness of that scene, they should have launched us into that and then had the intro, or even better that scene should have been last episode.

So what do you really think ? : A decent episode, with one feature which is done better than so much other Star Wars media, Kara falling to the Dark Side through anger, something we've seen so many other Jedi do without consequences. As mentioned above much of the episode is just bringing us to date and reads off like a checklist, "Yes we are in hiding.", "Yes I have found allies.", "Yes we don't need Zhima any more.", "Yes we're going back to the start of the Ninth Jedi story to get a big Kyber crystal in an effort to tie this all together.", but Kara's part of the story, and it's the major one is done well, she brings disaster to a peaceful world, and reacts naturally to it, with anger, but that has consequences. Enjoyable.

Final Words : And with 3 episodes to go, I'm getting into predictive mode, Kara will be captured, Zhima will already be at the Kyber Crystal, Homen Ethan and Kwana will attack Nawaam and end up rescuing Kara. There's obviously loads of details, but the end is in sight and taking shape. But it's the character scenes I'm looking forward to, mainly those involving the bad guys, Nawaam's resolution of where he falls on the Light Side / Dark Side spectrum, Gennoh's desired revenge on Zhima, I think there could be some interesting stuff to come even if there aren't any more major revelations to the main plot.

Score : 8.5/10
