Darth Vader (2017) 6: The Chosen One: Part 6

What is it ? : Vader suit is in pieces with the droid parts still attached, while he himself floats in a bacta tank. Palpatine comments that he has destroyed himself, but they will rebuild him, but he senses anger from Vader, and leaves him to use the Force to build his suit to his own requirements.
In the Jedi Temple a shadowy figure passes a display of a Temple Guard and says that they remember lies, and Vader is alerted to an intruder. The figure enters the temple library saying that no one with deny them to them now.
But Vader engages his lightsaber in front of them, telling them they are wrong. The figure ignites a spinning double bladed lightsaber, and the red blades clash. The figure is revealed to be the Grand Inquisitor, and the two fight with the Inquisitor showing greater skill, but Vader reveals he is only testing his suit and moves to strike the Inquisitor with a killing blow, but Palpatine orders him to stop.
Palpatine explains that while the Grand Inquisitor might be first among the Inquisition, that the Inquisition belongs to the Sith.
He takes them to the headquarters of the Inquisition, where the Grand Inquisitor explains to all of the other Inquisitors that they now serve two masters. While Vader questions if the Grand Inquisitor had beaten him would it now be the Grand Inquisitor standing at Palpatines side? But Palpatine tells him he, more than anyone else, should know not to question what could have been, but asks if there was any chance the Grand Inquisitor could have beaten him, and Vader states no.
Palpatine explains that the Inquisition is to hunt down the last survivors of the Jedi Order, as they are the greatest threat to their new Empire. And we see Jocasta Nu sipping coffee in a cave, with moons in the dark sky behind her. . . .

High Points : So we're getting to Palpatine slowly introducing Vader to his role within the Empire, which does seem incredibly advanced already. There's a fight, and Vader meets the Inquisitors, which I guess is the next stage of this series, hunting down the remaining Jedi. Which stands a good chance of being interesting, as we've never seen these early days of the purge, seeing Jedi in a panic as their Order has gone from leading the armies of the Republic, to being hunted and despised.

Low Points : Although the idea of Vader customising his Suit is solid, we know Anakin loved to tinker with technology, from building Podracers to modifying lightsabers and starfighters, but his finished suit looks no different to the one he's given in Revenge of the Sith. I suppose for once he could have just stuck to the design, but this seems out of character for Anakin/Vader (remember his modified Jedi Starfighter with the big podracing engines bolted on).
And we've seen that Palpatine was building the Inquisition behind the scenes before the day of Order 66, we saw in the Tales of the Empire series how he made Barriss Offee from a prisoner into an Inquisitor, recruiting from the jail cells of the Jedi. But we see none of that here, the Inquisition is fully formed, we see all the Inquisitors we've met over different series. Now obviously Tales of the Empire was written a number of years later, but the way the Inquisition is presented here just seems to be so finished, rather than there being any chaos of them just having been activated and setting things up. Perhaps we'll see more in future issues, but just here they just seem too fully formed for days after Order 66.

So what do you really think ? : It feels very much like a transition, we've had a story where Vader gets his lightsaber, and now we've getting a story where Vader leads the Inquisition. It feels a very clunky transition between stories though, rather than a smooth continuation of Vaders tale.

Final Words : The way I'm experiencing this series is far from ideal, as I'm sure back in 2017 this would have been revolutionary, the ideas of telling Vader stories (he needs a narrator character to work properly), Vader getting visions, the early days of the Inquisition. All of these have been revisited by later stories, but ones I have read already, which means they've been refined and improved as writers learned from what worked. But that does mean that this story, which originated so many of these ideas, does seem crude and rudimentary when reading it in this order.
